Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date is yet to be set, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Collection
The items reportedly kept in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away for years.
A complete inventory remains officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The query focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
