Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate following their development".
The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages showed that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the organization stated.
Political Context
This news comes after the two houses of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he intends to sign the bill, after reversing his position on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications showed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to connect the official to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were made available with the general audience, Summers said he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to restore faith and repair connections with the people closest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He presided over the institution from five years and continues to be a professor there. When stating his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that the economist was no longer connected with the group.
The former official entered the board of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
